BOWHILL Miners Boxing Club's Niamh Mitchell is one of the first competitors to be invited on to a programme identifying Olympic medal potential.
The 20-year-old, who made her Commonwealth Games debut for Scotland at this summer's event in Glasgow, will form part of GB Boxing's 'Future Olympic Medal Strategy' (FOMS).
The initiative is a new investment from the organisation, established in 2008, that is designed to identify talented fighters in home nation programmes.
Working in collaboration with Boxing Scotland, England Boxing, and Welsh Boxing, it seeks out those who have potential to medal at an Olympic Games.
It will provide targeted, personalised support, ahead of transitioning into GB Boxing's 'World Class Programme' (WCP), which aims to ensure the best boxers from the three nations are given the opportunity to develop, and win medals, at international tournaments.
Niamh, who was unfortunate to lose out to India's Priya Ghanghas, who went on to win gold, in her women's 60kg Commonwealth Games quarter-final bout, is one of 10 boxers chosen to be part of the programme.
She's one of seven females, and three males, that are involved.
They were nominated by each of the home nation governing bodies to take part in a three-day assessment camp at Sheffield's English Institute of Sport, with coaches from their respective home nations, and GB Boxing.
Selection criteria was based on potential to win an Olympic medal, competitive results at both national and international level, and a "discretionary assessment against GB Boxing's performance standards".
Since switching to the sport from kickboxing, Niamh has enjoyed a host of successes, including becoming the first female to win a major international title for Scotland, four years ago, at the EUBC (European Boxing Confederation) European Championships.
In 2025, at senior level, she won GB Three Nations gold, a silver medal at the USA Boxing Summer Festival, and competed at the inaugural World Boxing Championships.
Prior to the Commonwealth Games this year, Niamh made more history at the Bocskai Tournament in Hungary, where her gold medal success was Scotland's first-ever senior female international gold at an overseas multi-nation event.
She then won another gold medal at the Gee Bee Tournament in Finland, and bronze at the Algirdas Socikas Tournament in Lithuania, before competing in Glasgow.
James White, her club coach at Bowhill Miners, said: "It's brilliant for her.
"For me anyway, as her coach, I would like her to try something different, just to get another step onto the ladder.
"It's a world class programme down there. It's Robert McCracken, Richie Woodhall - big names.
"It would be great for her to experience that."
Boxers on the FOMS programme will each receive an individual athlete plan, agreed between themselves, their home nation and GB Boxing, and have the chance to access domestic and international training camps, and receive expert coaching.

"This first FOMS squad has shown real potential during the assessment process, and we’re looking forward to working closely with them and their Home Nations over the coming year."
