Hill of Beath Hawthorn 0 Bo'ness United 2, Scottish Gas Scottish Cup, second round (after extra-time).

HILL OF BEATH HAWTHORN suffered Scottish Cup heartbreak after giving Lowland League Bo'ness United a real run for their money in front of more than 500 fans at Keirs Park.

Two goals in extra-time sent Robbie Raeside's East of Scotland League Premier Division side out of the competition after a brave performance in their second round tie.

The Haws made a good start to the match, with Jordan Tosh going close with a header, whilst John Smith was unlucky not to see his shot go in soon afterwards.

Just before half-time, Brandon Luke came even closer, with his fierce shot coming back off the Bo'ness crossbar.

The visitors had rarely troubled Blair Penman in the home goal and, although after the break they caused Hill of Beath one or two problems, it was still the Haws who looked the more dangerous side.

Dan Watt hit the side netting from close range, before Smith tested the visiting goalkeeper and then, with time running out, Jonny Galloway set up Tosh, who whistled a shot inches wide.

With the scoreline blank at the end of 90 minutes, extra-time was required, and just two minutes in, a mix-up in the home defence allowed Lucas Stenhouse in to slip the ball into the net to put United ahead.

As Haws came back, a Tosh shot was blocked, and then Ross Allum saw his shot saved, but, with 10 minutes to go, a 25-yarder from Stenhouse flew into the net to give Bo'ness a place in the third round.

Raeside, however, was proud of his team's efforts, commenting: "I thought over the 90 minutes we gave Bo'ness a lot of problems and really went toe-to-toe with them.

"It was a bit of a misunderstanding that led to the first goal early in extra-time and, at the end of the day, that gave United that little advantage that they made full use of, but we did really well against a side a league above us."

Edinburgh University 2 Dundonald Bluebell 2, East of Scotland League, Premier Division.

DUNDONALD BLUEBELL were thwarted by a last minute goal as they were forced to share the spoils at Edinburgh University.

Short of a few of their regulars, Jason Dair's men fell behind midway through the first half, when a corner gave the students the opportunity to slot home from close range.

However, within two minutes, the Bluebell were level when Aiden Hendry's pass set up Regan Lumsden, who coolly finished.

The visitors then turned the game on its head two minutes after half-time when Ross Drummond made a good run and sent a cross into the box, which deflected off a defender and beat the University goalkeeper.

The hosts had a good spell after that, but Dundonald defended well and went on to create a few decent openings, but none were taken.

As the match went into its closing stages, the 'Bell saw three players have to go off with injuries, and under-20 players joined the fray and battled hard to defend their lead.

They did so well until the last minute, when a long cross into their penalty box wasn't cleared, and the ball was tucked into the net to deny them victory.

The result leaves Dundonald on 14 points from 11 games, and 10th in the table, and Dair said: "We came back well after losing an early goal an were worth our lead, but losing experienced players through injury for the closing stages made it tough, yet we looked to be seeing things out until the closing seconds.

"Hopefully we will have a couple of our injured group back for this week’s trip to Dunipace."

Crossgates Primrose 5 Dalkeith Thistle 4, East of Scotland Qualifying Cup, third round

CROSSGATES PRIMROSE boss Alan Campbell praised the "guts" his side showed in coming through an astonishing match with Dalkeith Thistle he said was "craziest I've ever been involved in".

The hosts raced into a three goal lead inside the opening half-an-hour, in which they were "as good as we've been all season", but conceded a goal just before the interval.

Then, in a remarkable second period at Humbug Park, East of Scotland League Second Division Dalkeith, on tier below Primrose, produced an incredible fightback to lead the tie with two minutes to go.

However, the drama was not yet over, as Campbell's side scored twice to snatch a fourth round place, with talisman, Scott Hynd, grabbing the winner.

Rab Kinnaird's double, and an own goal, had Crossgates in command before Jack Clark replied for the visitors, who then netted through Elliot Grieve, Kyle Brockie, and through an own goal of their own.

With time running out, Craig Henderson squared the game and, with Campbell and his coaching team preparing for extra-time, Hynd was on hand to score a sensational winner.

"We're closing in on 250 games in charge and, out of all of them, that is the craziest one I've ever been involved in," the Humbug boss said.

"In the first 30 minutes, we were brilliant. We scored three goals and were as good as we have been all season. We were in total cruise control.

"We lost a goal just before half-time, and I don't know if that gave them a lift, or we switched off, or maybe it was a bit of both.

"We started the second half poorly and it last for 10-15 minutes; we couldn't get into the game. In the last 15-20 minutes, we changed it and went for it, and it paid off. We went back to doing what we did at the start of the game - getting it down, playing it out wide, and getting crosses in.

"The players did well and dug themselves out of a hole. They showed guts.

"You've got to give Dalkeith credit. They played their part in an incredible game, and we're pleased and relieved to get through."

Preston Athletic 1 Lochore Welfare 2, East of Scotland League, First Division.

LOCHORE WELFARE picked up their first league win of the season to give their hopes of climbing out of the relegation places a boost.

Their opponents, Preston Athletic, have also had a difficult start to their campaign, but are now only three points ahead of James Adam's side, who have games in hand on the two teams immediately above them.

The hosts took the lead in the 23rd minute when the Welfare's defence was caught out, and they held their advantage until the interval, despite being put under pressure.

Within two minutes of the restart, however, Lochore equalised through a fine piece of work by Gregg Page, after Matty Christie and Tyler Dickson did the spadework.

Adam's side had the momentum and began to create some good chances, of which they took with 18 minutes left, when Page struck again after Ciaran Healy set him up.

Lochore had chances to score a third, but missed the target, and solid defensive work in the closing stages, as Preston attempted to mount a comeback, saw them close out a vital victory.

They are on six points from 10 matches, but, crucially, only three points from safety, and Adam said: "We turned around a goal down despite having the bulk of possession, but equalised early in the second half and the players fully deserved their win for they were by far the better team.

"We must look to build on this."
