FACILITIES operated by Fife Sports and Leisure Trust are being modified to ensure a "careful re-opening" for customers and staff.

Limiting the numbers of people accessing activities, in keeping with social distancing guidelines, one-way systems and additional training for employees are some of the measures being taken to ensure safety when they are able to open their doors again.

In the Scottish Government's four-phase route map for relaxing lockdown restrictions, gyms and indoor facilities will be allowed to open in phase three.

The next review date to determine whether measures can be eased further will take place on Thursday (July 9) and, while the trust can't set a clear date yet for the re-opening of any of its venues, preparatory work is underway.

Measures being implemented include the need for customers to book their activity before attending the centre, either online or over the phone; limiting the number of people accessing activities at the same time, in line with social distancing guidelines; centres being accessed by their main entrances only, with signage displayed to guide customers to their activity, and how to exit the building; only one person at a time being permitted to use toilets; and staff receiving additional training on enhanced cleaning and safety measures.

In a post updating customers on its Facebook page, the trust said: "We're planning a careful re-opening of our facilities with you and our staff's health and safety in mind!

"We're currently working throughout our facilities to modify the layouts, where appropriate, to ensure you can be active and feel great while protecting yourself and others.

"Our focus is on keeping our facilities safe and clean while we get ready for your return.

"For those looking to stay active, we have a fantastic range of free live-streamed virtual fitness sessions available each day, and we are really pleased with the positive reaction we have from people in Fife, and internationally, to the great work, our fitness instructors are doing."

The trust operates facilities such as Bowhill Swimming Pool, Cowdenbeath Leisure Centre and Lumphinnans Sports Hub in the Cowden-Gelly area.

They had to make the "difficult decision" to close all of their sites across the Kingdom on March 18 to slow the spread of the COVID-19 outbreak.

With centres closed, the trust has been running online classes for people who are looking to stay active during lockdown.
