ON Sunday March 29 a 50th Anniversary Reunion is being held at Central Park for the Cowdenbeath team which won promotion to the First Division.

An invitation is going out from from skipper Andy Kinnell, his team-mates and Cowdenbeath FC, to fans to go along that day and remember when the club was last in Scotland's top flight.

On Tuesday March 31 1970, around about 9.10pm, the loudest roar heard in Cowdenbeath for many a year, and indeed from that day to this, rang out at Central Park.

The five-figure crowd had just watched Billy Bostock head the ball into the net to give Cowden a famous 2-1 victory over great promotion rivals Falkirk – Sir Alex Ferguson and all. Four days later, Cowden finished the job with a home draw v Queen of the South and they were back in the ‘Big Time’ after a 31 year hiatus.

It was the big match on Scotsport that evening. Andy Matthew’s boys then marched on into Division One where they would face such sides as European Cup runners up Celtic, and a Rangers team that would win the European Cup Winners Cup two years later.

Later in 1970 that same Cowdenbeath side went on to play Rangers at Hampden in the League Cup semi-final.

Club director and football hostorian, David Allan said: "For Cowden fans of that era these were surely the best days of our lives – the days of Davie Ross, Billy McLauchlan, John Dickson, Billy Mullen, Andy Kinnell and all the others.

"Skipper Andy Kinnell and his former colleagues were very keen to mark the 50th anniversary of that great side and so approached Cowdenbeath FC to see if a reunion event would be possible. Cowdenbeath FC were absolutely delighted to be approached and there really was no way we would wish to let such a milestone pass without proper commemoration.

"Many folks rate the Brazil team of 1970 as the best ever but for many locally that accolade well and truly belongs to the Blue Brazil team of 1970!"

He added: "Thus, here is an invite to you all from Andy and all the lads. They would like to see the Cowden fans who once followed them so ardently, as well of course as any other Cowden fans, to come along to a Cowdenbeath FC 1970 - 50th Anniversary Reunion Brunch to be held at Central Park on Sunday March 29 12.30pm for 1pm – just two days shy of the 50th anniversary of that wonderful win over Falkirk.

"The boys of 1970 who will be in attendance are Andy Kinnell, Denis Jack, Jim Taylor, Davie Ross, Davie Cairns, Drew Michie, Jim McArthur, Colin McCullie, Allan Kennedy, Robin Thomson, Jim Moore, Billy Laing and Billy Mullen, as well as Derek Matthew (son of Andy Matthew). "Sadly of course several of their team-mates are no longer with us. So please do get your ticket now and come along to support these local heroes one more time – don’t leave it until the 60th anniversary!"

The format is based on a Sportsman’s Brunch so there will be a brunch and speakers – already confirmed is former Scotland ‘keeper Alan Rough. Roughie of course has many a tale to tell of his footballing and post-footballing days! There may also be some surprises! There will also be other footballing guests in attendance - going along to enjoy the afternoon and already confirmed are such Cowden legends as Andy Rolland, Raymie Allan and Kenny Ward.

Tickets are available from the Office, at Central Park, or from the Cowdenbeath directors - price is just £25. So get yours ASAP as they will be quickly snapped up!
