BOXING clever to earn a Celtic belt is Emma McCulloch's aim after a title bout was confirmed for early next year.

The 27-year-old will return to the ring on January 31 to take on Danielle Hodges for the Celtic light flyweight title after the British Boxing Board of Control gave it the go-ahead.

Lochgelly star Emma, a member of Glenrothes Boxing Club, will go head-to-head with 33-year-old Hodges for the second time in six months after they faced each other in July.

That fight, which took place in Dudley, in the West Midlands, was just the second professional contest of four-time Boxing Scotland Elite Championship women's light flyweight 48kg champion Emma, and ended in an extremely narrow 58-57 loss on points.

This time, however, she'll have the backing of home support when it is staged in Glenrothes' Gilvenbank Hotel, and will be held over eight rounds, two more than when the pair last met.

Despite losing out last time out, Emma – who is backed by sponsors Diamond Fitness, of Lochgelly, Ryan Knox Carpet Fitter, and Cartmore Building Supplies – took plenty of encouragement, and is confident that she can come out on top.

"We've managed to arrange the rematch with Dani following the very close result down south in July," Emma told Times Sport.

"I'm really excited about the possibility of a Celtic title. I'm grateful that Stevie (McGuire, coach) has been able to source such an opportunity – they don't come along often, particularly on your own doorstep!

"I'm looking forward to having the support of family, friends and local community. It can make a real difference.

"I'm confident I can turn the tables this time.

"We boxed six rounds in the summer but I'm looking forward to stepping up to eight in just my third professional fight.

"I felt the fittest I've been so I'll be looking to replicate that and some more!"

Emma's dad, Allan, who also coaches with Glenrothes, added: "A weight of 48kg has been agreed, and Emma is happy as larry as that is her weight. Both Dani Hodges and Emma know what to work towards.

"Stevie has said that, if she wins the Celtic title, then he'll push for a British title on the back of it."
