COWDENBEATH Karate Club have enjoyed a busy month fighting in the UK an in mainland Europe with some outstanding success.

Melissa Maxwell travelled to Basel for the 2018 Basel Masters tournament, one of Europe's elite championships and ended up winning gold is her section showing international class in all bouts and bringing the title back to the Cowdenbeath club.

Next up was a trip to Darlington for the North East Open where youngster Cole Webster secured the club's first medal with a bronze in his event . Robyn Ironside then won silver and Elize Bauld bronze in their respective sections.

Sammi Maxwell, however, gave the day's top display beating all top opposition to win the 2018 title followed by her sister Melissa who won the ladies black belt section.

Last was the three man adult team event with the teams comprising of two males and one female fighter.

The Cowdenbeath team sweep away all teams to reach the final only to lose 2-1 and secure the runners-up slot. Allan Goodwin also won bronze in his section on the day

Next up was the Northern England Championships, held in Barnsley. Elize Bauld again won silver as did Sammi Maxwell but gold was secured by Robyn Ironside who once again was the club's leading fighter and added to her recent haul of titles with another tremendous display.

Last event was the Wishaw Grandprix, which is four separate events held over the year with points awarded for each medal and then totalled up to decide the overall champion.

Elize Bauld battled through some very tough fights to win on the day and secure the overall 2018 title which she retained from last year. Next up was Robyn Ironside who won gold in her event sweeping away all in her section and she continues to improve and progress all the time having also won silver in the recent Irish Open in Dublin.

Kirsty McAlpine and James Ford also finished overall winners in their groups, Allan Goodwin won bronze in the main event which was the adult black belt section with club mate Ben Smith winning silver. However, Ben had amassed enough points over the year and despite being the smallest and lightest in his group won the overall adult championship for 2018.

Club instructor Gordon Maxwell was delighted with the way the Cowdenbeath fighters adapted to tough tests and commented: "Great effort and endeavour was shown from all the fighters who continue to improve and progress we are now training for the Scottish championships and travel in December for the Lisbon Open. "Thanks to all parents and supporters for their efforts."
