Elgin City 3, Cowdenbeath 1,

Ladbrokes League 2

Attendance-545

THE game that never was started brilliantly for Cowdenbeath but at the end of the day they left the Highlands, on Saturday, pointless.

The Boroughbriggs surface was in much better condition than in August, when stones lying on the surface saw the referee call it off.

And the Blue Brazil started well and grabbed an early lead but they then conceded possession to easily after that and finished with ten men and two goals adrift.

‘Keeper Dave McGurn got the red card for a foul in the box which gave Elgin the penalty which sealed the result for the home side and over the piece they deserved to win it.

After struggling in the early stages, Elgin came back strongly and the penalty gave them the breathing space they needed for Cowdenbeath had two really good chances late on which could have made the closing seconds interesting.

Elgin really took control of the midfield in the second period and Kyle Miller and Blair Malcolm found themselves being overrun in that department.

Jordyn Sheerin and Martin Scott found it hard to get many chances and the best openings fell to David Cox who took his goal well.

The Blue Brazil got a dream start with a goal in only 10 minutes. Sheerin provided the opening for COX with a nice pass and the attacking midfielder blasted home from 20 yards with his left foot.

Cowdenbeath attacked strongly and Sheerin saw his right foot drive brilliantly saved by Kyle Gourlay six minutes later but in 25 minutes Elgin levelled.

The dangerous Shane SUTHERLAND fired home from the middle of the box after the visiting rearguard gave him time to steady himself.

After that City started to dictate play and then home side’s Greg Morrison and Robin Omar saw shots blocked and the visitors had to work hard to get to the break level.

Cowdenbeath had to start the second-half strongly to get back into the game but in 50 minutes they fell behind.

The visiting defenders lost concentration when Jordan Lowden supplied the pass to Daryl McHARDY and his left foot drive gave McGurn no chance to make it 2-1.

Four minutes later Sheerin was unlucky to see a shot blocked but at the other end Brian Cameron saw McGurn pull off a great save from his 20 yarder and 11 minutes later McGurn was sent packing after a foul on Morrison in the Cowden box.

SUTHERLAND gave the stand-in ‘keeper no chance from the spot and it gave Elgin the safety cushion they wanted as Cowden went on the attack in time added on Malcolm saw his shot blocked and then Cox saw his drive suffer the same fate as the hosts held on for three very valuable points.
