ANOTHER good week for Cowdenbeath in the West Fife competitions, writes Jack High.

On Tuesday Billy Allan, Bobby Reekie, Davie McKay and Lindsay Black played Kinghorn at Crossgates in the quarter-final of the Babbs, having won their section over 14 games.

They started really well and caught the green quickly going into a 12-3 lead. A change of length allowed the Kinghorn skip to draw a shot with his last bowl (12-4) they then scored a five at the next end at the different length when Jim Smith lifted a shot and Lindsay was short (12-9), Kinghorn played better at the new length and levelled it at 12-12 with two ends to go.

Kinghorn were lying two and a measure for three when Lindsay played a couple of feet through the head and chapped the shot out to lie. Back to the length they had been playing and the Kinghorn rink struggled a wee bit but it was very close for the shot but Cowdenbeath progressed by two shots 14-12.

In the other quarter finals at Crossgates, Headwell, Abbeyview and Dunfermline Northern won.

Cowdenbeath play Headwell at Inverkeithing next Tuesday and Abbeyview play the North.

On Wednesday, Crossgates were the visitors at Cowdenbeath in the quarter final of the West Fife knockout Cup. All three games were a bit one sided with Craig Allan's rink beating Alan Moncur, Eric McMillan, Steven Hunter and Robert McFarlane 22-14.

John Allan, Davie McKay, Mitch Drysdale and Lindsay Black were in good form and beat Robert Thomson's rink 19-3 after 14 ends.

Billy Allan, Wullie Wightman, Robert Thompson and Andy Johnstone were well in control on their rink and won 30-8. Home advantage helped. The semi-final is at Dalgety Bay next Wednesday and at Aberdour where they play Inverkeithing. A great week for Cowdenbeath Bowling Club.

Emma Connor played her semi-final of the West Fife 'Jean Mitchell' singles at Dalgety Bay against Townhill's Lynne Lees.

Both played good bowls but Emma had two bad ends where she lost threes. The rest were all singles and a couple of two's. The score of 21-7 did not really represent the standard of bowls on display. No doubt the better player won on the night but the score could have been a lot closer. Great experience for Emma.

Tuesday hat night winners were Jean McKenzie and Eddie Hastie.

On Friday night the annual 'Overs v Unders' competition was played on the green with captains being nominated as Kevin Keir and Eddie Hastie. There was a good turn out with teams picked on the night.

On Saturday, the Gardner Two Bowl Pairs was played. Teams were drawn on the day. The standard of bowls on display was very good - particularly John Allan who was excellent for most of the day. The semi-finals were between Linda Duff and Darren Leitch who played John Allan and George Bett. George has only played a few games but John advised him well.

The game was tight with Darren needing a shot for an extra end and lying a shot with George's last bowl to come. He drew the shot. In the other semi-final David Hunt and Lindsay Black played David Duff and Brian Simpson. David and Lindsay got off to the perfect start to go 9-0 up. They only won by a shot. In the final, David Hunt produced his best bowls of the day against John Allan which helped Lindsay considerably. They went 10-0 ahead to win the trophy....

On Sunday, the Rinks competiton was played to as conclusion with the semi finals between Robert McFarlane's rink and Wullie Wightman's rink and Darren Leitch's against Andy Johnstone's.

There had been a fair amount of rain overnight and it was raining lightly on the afternoon of the game prompting a couple to say they were not prepared to get wet for a game of bowls.

The semi-final between Wullie Wightman's rink and Robert McFarlane's went ahead with one player drafted in from the other rink that didn't play. The game was very close with only two shots in the game with two to play for Robert. It had basically been all singles scored as the heads were very close.

At the second last end, Robert's rink were lying four with the jack balanced on the edge of the green. Wullie had a shot to put the jack in the ditch but was short. Before he played his second bowl the jack fell in to the ditch. Wullie failed to cut down so conceded. In the final, Steven Hunter, Derek Easson, Peter Graham and Robert McFarlane played Billy Allan, Lindsay Black, Mitch Drysdale and Andy Johnstone.

The standard was very high with lots of very tight heads. The game was level at 1, 3, 5, 6 and playing the last end Billy threw a bowl about 4" short and Lindsay threw on that close at the side. Derek Easson had one 6" away and back bowls. Peter Graham drew and rested the shot bowl but was still two down. Mitch played a blocker which Robert hit. Andy dropped another short bowl prompting Robert top change his hand.

He missed by a bowl's width to let Andy's rink retain the trophy.

Broad Street Bowling Club reached the semi-finals of the Scottish Inter County Top Five Singles after beating Busby at Glasgow on Sunday.

They now play at Sighthill in the last four - which is played off in the one day.
