ON visiting Cowdenbeath’s Cuddyhouse Road Recycling Centre this afternoon, I was surprised to find that it was closed on account of the pandemic.
This strikes me as an over-reaction by Fife Council or some higher level of Government.
The recycling centre is an outdoor facility operating a one-way system, and is almost exclusively used by people coming in motor vehicles. Usually it is fairly quiet. If occasionally it is busy then people can queue in their cars.
Users are not picking up things handled by other people, but throwing waste in skips and hoppers. The risk of catching or passing on infection is significantly lower than on an essential visit to your local supermarket.
Also, what better time to spring clean your home than now? Decision makers need to be more nuanced and start to dial down excessive restrictions.

The recycling centres at Lochgelly and Cowdenbeath, as were all the recycling centre facilities throughout Fife, closed at the start of the lockdown by Fife Council. The Ed.
