WHAT an interesting article in the Times about the telephone boxes being taken out of circulation.

A telephone box used to be something that there were more than a few of in every community.

However, over the past 20 years that mobile phone has bound to have made these less busy.

I suppose that they, BT, will assume that everyone has a mobile these days and that there is no need for a phone box.

The thing is that not everyone has a mobile phone, especially among older people, so to take all of the phone boxes away would be wrong.

When you think about it to take every telephone box away from the likes of Lumphinnans, Hill of Beath, Cardenden, Benarty and Kelty would be wholly wrong.

Even Cowdenbeath and Lochgelly deserve to have a box or two for there will be people who will use them.

The lad from the Scottish Parliament who is looking to campaign on the subject is right that the more rural an area is the more mobile signals are uncertain and the certainty is that a phone box would be needed in a small community.

I am not sure what the criteria will be to keep any of our phone boxes in this area but I hope that Mr Stewart is successful in keeping at least some of our phone boxes.

All kids have mobile phones but the thing is that for more senior citizens, these are not quite something that is top of the shopping list.

So hopefully we won't lose all of our phone boxes and there will be a few left for people to use when necessary.
