MAY I take the opportunity to expressed how fortunate the Fife area is to have so many dedicated people in the NHS, who work to make other’s lives so much better.

I was born and brought up in Cowdenbeath but have spent most of my adult life in London, where I met and married my husband, Ron Freeman, who was the Wig and Makeup Master for the Royal Opera House for many years.

We recently came up to Cowdenbeath for a family celebration but unfortunately, Ron took seriously ill and was admitted into the Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy.

Having endured complex ill health issues for many years, Ron had experience of the big teaching hospitals in London. However, the team of doctors and nurses in Ward 22 at the Victoria Hospital, displayed a level of care and humanity that we had rarely seen in London. Nursing staff in particular were truly amazing. Every single one treated my husband not only with dignity but like an old friend.

They also went to great lengths to ensure that I was supported during his stay, something that was sadly lacking in London hospital wards.

When he was finally discharged, the highest level of care continued with Hospital at Home, District and Marie Curie nurses. I can’t express how fortunate you all are to have such people serving in your local NHS. London hospitals have a lot to learn from these dedicated people.

I must also take this opportunity to highlight the outstanding team at John Gilfillan, Funeral Director in Lochgelly, who went to great lengths to ensure Ron’s final journey was exactly as I wanted it. Their attention to detail was kindness itself.

So the next time, anyone feels the need to complain about all things medical, just remember....count your blessings! I return to London this week, alone but knowing that my dear husband’s final days were full of love and care from dedicated staff who work in the Fife area.
