IT was brilliant to read of the way local MSPs supported the work done by the Benarty and Lochgelly Credit Union.

The set up has been doing brilliantly over three decades in encouraging people to save and providing loans at a very reasonable interest rates.

At a time that the banking industry has gone through some very difficult times with branch closures having occurred in Kelty, Lochgelly and Cowdenbeath the work of the Benarty Credit union has been totally solid.

They have been a rock solid thing that has been so necessary and has proved very popular with subscribers and borrowers.

Providing a solid base which encourages people to save and borrow on has been a brilliant part of the credit union and such has been its success you would have expected other communities to consider the same idea. However, not many have followed.

But that is their loss for the developing success of Benarty and Lochgelly Credit Union is good news for this area.

One of the other good features of it as well is encouraging kids to get involved and join to learn about saving from an early age.

Going into Lochgelly High School and primary schools has been a superb idea and gets young people on board at a very early stage.

Starting in Benarty and moving into Lochgelly has been a very solid idea which has seen the membership grow and it is a total good news story.

It was excellent that their story was taken to the Scottish Parliament and it must have impressed them.

There is no doubt that the good news story is going to continue and hopefully the membership will continue to build.
