WHAT an interesting discussion on the plans for children to walk to Lochgelly High School from Benarty.

Certainly the Health and Wellbeing idea has been strongly promoted in a move to get children think about their own physical fitness.

No doubt walking to school could make a huge difference to some children's fitness so it is an interesting debate.

Having walked that road myself regularly I can see where the councillors are coming from for a lot of traffic uses the Benarty road to head towards the M90 via the fishtail.

That probably is especially so when talking about heavy goods vehicles. These vehicles can run past you at any time of day but morning and evening times are probably the most prevalent.

I would say that in my experience though, the highest speeds are recorded by cars and vans not the lorries and these would be the main concern if this walking to school idea took off.

Folk are often racing to get to work in the morning, then racing to get home in the late afternoon and it can all add up to a dangerous mix.

This is going to be hard one to call because can you trust the motorists to keep to the speed limit?

Maybe a lot of publicity when the thing goes into action might have an effect of making them think about their speed but will it last?

Maybe the best idea would be to have a pilot project of maybe a couple of months to see how things work then take it from there.

However, there is no doubt the councillors are right to be concerned about children's safety.
