THE recent letters in the Times about the problems people have been experiencing in cemeteries is unlikely to go away quickly.

There have been observations in the paper from people finding problems in Beath, Lochgelly and Ballingry cemeteries but the problem simply is the council is having to make financial trimmings in every area and the cemeteries are one of these.

I can remember visiting my father’s grave at the cemetery in Ballingry some years ago and it was always pretty tidy and well looked after.

However, at times it can suffer from bins being full and longish grass.

The problem the council has is trying to provide the same service with limited resources and it is inevitable that the quality is going to suffer.

The local authority does not have the number of staff to allow to work on the cemeteries as they had five years ago.

The council needs to be able to raise more money and not just for the cemeteries.

What is happening in our cemeteries is no different to that being experienced by communities all over Scotland and unless councils are allowed to raise more funds there will be problems with cemeteries and many other services.
