VERMIN around burns is nothing new so I was a little surprised to hear of the concern about the discovery at the petrol station on High Street.

I would have thought that this would have been something that would have been happening for some time.

The burn has been a source of problem for years for many reasons.

A lot of people seem to think of is OK to dump rubbish on the banks of it which is ridiculous.

The problems that Councillor Watt sees developing could be something that indeed, can be nipped in the bud, but by the same token if it is not sorted out then it could have really negative effect on the town.

It is often said that people are never more than a few feet from a rat but these normally are not seen.

What has been happening near the garage is by no means good and especially when the work has just started on the building of these two stores on North End Park.

The pitch itself had become a wilderness over the summer months so the arrival of the diggers has been a welcome sight for me for I hated seeing the once proud pitch a wilderness.

Clearly with the stores likely to be finished next year and all the work at the south end of High Street bad news such as having rats on your main shopping street is not good.

Hopefully between the council and the owners of the garage this will be well sorted within a few short weeks.

As I say though wherever there is water there will be rodents although no doubt these days there will be ways and means of dissuading the unwelcome visitors from making any swift return to the area around the north end.
