'I AM delighted to be writing in the Politician’s Opinion Column once again, these are unprecedented times and I want to re-assure you all that I’m continuing to work around the clock to represent each and every young person in the Cowdenbeath Constituency. Please get in touch if you have an issue, concern or comment.

Roadmap out of Lockdown

Last week, the First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon published the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown in Scotland. This is guided by the science to ensure we get this right and avoid a second peak of the coronavirus later in the year.

For now, no one knows what phases of the plan will be brought in when. It all depends on the ‘R’ rate, the lower the ‘R’, the quicker we move through the phases and try to return to some sense of ‘normality’.

I would urge everyone to take time out of their day and to read over the roadmap out of lockdown for themselves, rather than reading newspaper headlines and trying to understand from the news. Read it direct from the source.

Schools

Under the roadmap, it has been suggested schools will return in August, as part of a hybrid approach, with teaching being done in the classroom and online. This is well and truly the future, but I want to reassure young people that this is nothing to worry about. Teachers, support staff and education officials are working around the clock to ensure you get the best possible education given the circumstances.

No one knows how long this approach will be in place, but it is the best way to protect you, your family and your friends. Many of you have engaged significantly well with online learning, consistently engaging with class teachers and reaching out for help when it is needed. I have no doubt that this will continue as you are phased back into school, however this may look.

Lo’gelly Lunches

I have had the pleasure of giving up my time during lockdown to help out down at Lo’gelly Lunches with Lorraine Mullen and many others. I truly believe that without this service provision, which was mobilised quickly, many families would be left without food and many other necessities.

The service being provided by the team is outstanding and truly is a lifeline for many families. I cannot thank Lorraine and everyone more for the work they are doing. As well as many other services across the constituency, including Benarty Food Bank and Max’s Meals.
