THE issue of the quality of the school meals at Lochgelly and Beath High Schools seems to be dragging on.

Last May a motion at Cowdenbeath Area Committee by Member of the Scottish Youth Parliament, Bailey-Lee Robb, succeeded in asking for a survey of what pupils thought of the quality of the meals served up at the schools and the pricing structure.

Councillors thought that they would get the report before the end of the year but a mixture of problems saw it not going before the committee until their January meeting.

What dismayed Bailey-Lee was that the survey only covered 16 percent of pupils as it was carried out just before the Christmas holidays and early in January.

The General Election in December meant that the Area Committee meeting was cancelled which put the whole process behind schedule.

However, the report that was tabled on January 29 did put forward commitment that the education department is ready to ensure that a thorough examination of the school meals issue at the two local schools will be going ahead.

A special group involving pupils from Beath and Lochgelly Highs will be looking thoroughly into the quality of meals and before the summer a detailed assessment of the quality of meals and pricing should be complete.

While it has been delayed, the examination of the school meals issue is being dealt with and the committee members are ready to take on board all the information from the young consumers and take the issue to the next stage which has to be seen as very encouraging.
