OVER the past 30 years flaring from the Mossmorran Petro-Chemical complex has been something which has occurred from time to time.

There is no doubt that the tall flare stack at the Exxon/Mobil FEP site is the one which makes the biggest impact.

Although it does not happen often, the fact is that when there is a breakdown in the production system it means flaring for a couple of days at least.

Councillor Alex Campbell has written to the Scottish Government wanting questions answered and maybe it is a way of getting key assurances on safety.

But the company has always stated that the flare is the mechanism which ensures safety at FEP.

The plant has consistently been upgraded over the years and Exxon have repeatedly described as one of their best fractionation plants in the whole of Europe.

So maybe there is no need for any concerns, but as long as flaring continues there will be worries tabled by the public.
