BRITISH Transport Police are trying to trace the owner of an urn believed to contain human ashes after it was found on a train that travelled through Fife.

The small red urn, wrapped in purple and white artificial flowers and accompanied by a small brown teddy bear, was handed in as lost property after an LNER service from London King's Cross arrived in Aberdeen.

Officers believe it may have been lost at some point during the journey, which passes through the Kingdom, within the last four months.

Police say the urn appears to contain human ashes or remains and are appealing for help to reunite it with its rightful owner.

BTP PC Gary Herning said: "The urn appears to contain human ashes or remains and will clearly be of enormous sentimental value to someone.

"Unfortunately, we have no further information on where the owner may have boarded or alighted during the journey. We're issuing the appeal in the hope that the individual or family concerned will reach out to us so that we can arrange its safe return."

Anyone who owns the urn, or who knows who it belongs to, is asked to contact British Transport Police by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 2600110174.

Information can also be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
