Search the Public Notice PortalNetwork Rail’s plans to overhaul the railway bridge in Cardenden have been approved – clearing the way for a four‑month closure of the busy route later this month.
Fife Council has signed off a prior approval application for the re‑decking and refurbishment of the bridge, which carries two railway lines over Cardenden Road in a mainly residential part of the area.
The project includes replacing the ageing timber deck and cast iron edge girders, strengthening corroded steelwork and repairing the masonry abutments and wing walls.
The works form part of the wider electrification of the Fife Circle line between Inverkeithing and Thornton via Cowdenbeath, paving the way for new battery electric trains on the route.
According to documents lodged with the council, the programme is scheduled to run from August 17 to December 18.
Network Rail says the upgrade is needed to tackle deterioration caused by the bridge’s age, weathering and general wear and tear, and to keep it safe and reliable for continued railway use.
A separate application has been made for the temporary closure of Cardenden Road beneath the bridge, and diversion routes will be put in place for traffic while the works are carried out.
In its report of handling, the council’s planning service concluded the scheme meets national rules for permitted development on operational railway land and that the design and appearance of the upgraded bridge would not harm the amenity of the surrounding area.
