Scottish Water says it hopes the emergency road closure on Lochgelly's Station Road can be lifted before the weekend, after the route was shut earlier today (Monday) due to a collapsed manhole chamber.
The affected stretch of Station Road lies between the railway bridge and Lochgelly High School, where the damaged manhole chamber was identified in the middle of the carriageway during routine maintenance.
Passengers are being urged to check directly with bus operators for the latest updates, and drivers heading to Lochore Meadows Country Park and Fife Cycle Park are being asked to follow signed alternative routes around the closure.
The Visitor Centre at The Meedies will close at the earlier time of 6pm tonight (Monday), "due to difficulties some staff will experience travelling to and from work using public transport".
They hope to return to normal opening hours tomorrow (Tuesday), and apologise for any inconvenience.
A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “A collapsed manhole was discovered on Station Road, Lochgelly, following routine maintenance on the manhole cover.
"For the safety of road users and our operatives on site, a road closure remains in place while repairs are carried out.
“Our contractor will be on site from tomorrow (August 4) to carry out their repairs. At this stage, we are hopeful that the road closure can be lifted before the weekend.
“We appreciate the disruption this closure is causing local residents, businesses and road users and are working to complete the repairs as quickly and safely as possible.
"We would like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding while this essential repair is carried out.”
