A LITTLE bit of local history took place recently with the closure of Cowdenbeath and District Probus Club.
The Probus movement was formed in the UK in 1965 and the Cowdenbeath club, catering for the entire Central Fife area, started in the 1980s.
Cowdenbeath Probus originally met in Cowdenbeath, then moved to Macainsh Church, Lochgelly, after several years.
Former member, Jim Taylor, from Benarty, also a former member of Cowdenbeath Rotary Club, recalled the development of the set-up locally: “The first President was Mr A.S. Wilson in 1985 and the last was David Tindle in 2026.
“There were many interesting speakers who gave their time freely to entertain at the club at the monthly meetings.
“Frequent visitors also came from sister clubs in Fife, and from local history groups, plus also many charities, who came along to relate to the members about their work, and were rewarded with generous donations from Probus members.
“Subjects discussed were varied and diverse, and many were absolutely fascinating. After every meeting the members left having learned so much!”
Added Jim: “Sadly the last meeting of Cowdenbeath Probus was the A.G.M. in May 2026.
“Dwindling member numbers in recent years has meant it was not possible to continue to have our monthly meetings, which was a little sad.
“However, there are many other Probus clubs in Fife, including Dunfermline, for anyone who maybe interested in joining the organisation. Just search for Probus Clubs on the internet and an option will emerge.”
