A petition calling for the X56 bus service to be saved has gathered more than 1,000 signatures, as opposition grows towards plans to scrap the Kelty route
The campaign, launched last week, argues the Perth to Edinburgh circular is a “vital service” linking rural communities with the capital, particularly for students, workers and elderly passengers.
It comes after Stagecoach confirmed the X56 will be withdrawn from August 24, citing declining demand and saying the route is “no longer sustainable”.
The service currently runs hourly between Perth and Edinburgh, travelling via Kelty and Halbeath Park and Ride.
Comments on the petition highlight how busy the bus is at peak times and describe it as a “lifeline” for those who do not drive or are disabled, and for families using it for nursery and school runs.
Campaigners also warn that cutting the route undermines efforts to move more people onto public transport and reduce car use.
Kelty councillor Alex Campbell has already branded the decision an “outrage”, warning it will have a “massive detrimental impact” and calling for urgent talks between Stagecoach, Fife Council and the Scottish Government.
Stagecoach said alternative options will remain available, including services via Halbeath and Scottish Citylink connections.
