Families have a ball at World Cup themed Crossgates Gala

There were smiles all around as the day kicked off at 12pm on Saturday and the gala parade made its way through the village, starting at the Scottish Mines Rescue Station on Main Street.

Led by local councillors, with dance groups, a pipe band, and local children's groups following closely behind, spectators looked on to see kids waving flags of different World Cup countries.

Once at Windmill Knowe Park, Mikey Mowhawk officially opened the event, introducing the performers and welcoming them to the stage.

Crossgates Gala committee member, Maureen Cuthbertson, said: "It went really well, we were very fortunate with the weather, we got a good turnout so were very pleased."

There was truly something for everyone on the day, and children could pick from playing on inflatables, seeing exotic animals, running in the races or watching dance and salsa performances.

Hayley Cassells, another committee member, said: "We're one of the few galas that still do this, but we gave out free wristbands for kids under 16, and a food bag."

Despite the memorable day, both Hayley and Maureen warn that the gala was only possible due to the hard work of volunteers and more new committee members are needed if the event is to go ahead next year.
