A Cowdenbeath dad is preparing to run a 100-mile ultramarathon in one of the UK’s toughest endurance events.

Craig Mackenzie, 40, will take on the Rat Race 100 from Bamburgh Castle to Edinburgh Castle this weekend, marking a major milestone in a remarkable year of personal transformation and achievement.

He made the decision to stop drinking alcohol just over a year ago, a change that quickly fuelled a new passion for fitness and the outdoors.

Since then, he has completed a half marathon, full marathon, 50km ultramarathon, and HYROX events in London and Oslo.

He has also begun climbing Munros.

His wife, Kelly Mackenzie, said: "Watching Craig over the past year has been nothing short of inspiring.

"What started as a decision to stop drinking has completely transformed his life.

"He’s become fitter, healthier and more determined than ever before.

"Every time he reaches a goal, he sets himself another challenge.

"From completing marathons and HYROX events to climbing Munros and raising money for charity, he just keeps proving to himself what he’s capable of.

"As a family, we’re incredibly proud of everything he’s achieved."

In addition to his athletic pursuits, Mr Mackenzie has raised funds for Crohn’s & Colitis UK and Ronald McDonald House Charities - causes that are deeply personal to him and his family.

He hopes his story will inspire others to embrace change and discover hidden strengths at any stage of life.

Mrs Mackenzie said: "Turning 40 has become another milestone in what’s been an incredible year.

"This challenge isn’t just about running 100 miles - it’s about showing that one positive decision can open the door to opportunities you never imagined.

"Whether you’re aiming to improve your health, challenge yourself or give back through charity, Craig is proof that amazing things can happen when you commit to your goals.

"No matter what happens this weekend, he’s already inspired so many people, and we’ll be cheering him on every step of the way.”
