Fife Council application lodged to extend Viewforth High School

An application to extend Viewforth High on the Windmill Community Campus in Kirkcaldy has been submitted by Fife Council.

If permitted, a single storey extension will be provided.

A planning statement explained that the new facility would be around 438 square metres and be situated on the north wing of the existing school.

It continued: “The scope will also include remodelling of the existing school in the SFL (support for learning) area to provide additional teaching space.

“This will provide an increase in capacity from 600 to 750 pupils

“The proposal includes additional learning spaces to accommodate an increased pupil roll due to the housing developments in the area. This includes additional toilets and flexible retreat spaces that would enhance the experience for some of the vulnerable pupils and benefit the staff within this provision.

“The design solution for the proposed extension will be a single-storey construction, consisting of a simple rectangular form similar materiality design principles to the existing building, blending in subtlety with the surrounding context.

“The extension has been designed within the budget constraints of the client, and provides a new modern 21st century multi-user additional space for the pupils and teachers of Viewforth High School.”

The Windmill Community Campus was built in 2016 and includes Viewforth High, Rosslyn School as well as a public library and local office.

If given the go-ahead, Fife Council hope construction of the new extension could start in October and be finished by June next year.
