Pupils at Cowdenbeath Primary School are celebrating their recent STEM success.
The primary six and seven students have been working hard learning about how to be climate smarter for Stemovators, an educational programme which aims to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.
As part of Stemovators, the youngsters had to build a model school using renewable energy and had to learn about different types of energy.
Danni Cook, teacher at Cowdenbeath Primary School, said: “They have to learn about wind energy, solar energy, hydro energy, and green energy.
“Everything they learn about, they actually have to make it as well, but they have to get it to function.
“So, if they are using solar panels, they have to use it to light up light bulbs and things like that.
“It's not like they're just learning about it. They have to physically do it and learn from it.
“Then the outcome is that they build their eco-friendly school at the end, putting all their learning into the model”.
The school models did not need to function, but the one created by the pupils did. They even made lights that were activated by clapping.
Cowdenbeath Primary School were also named regional STEM showcase winners, after being up against other schools across Fife.
Danni added: “Part of the reason the judges said they won it was because they were honest about what they found difficult.
“They made it accessible for disabled people, so they had ramps at the park, and they had a lift in their school.
“They went around shaking everybody's hand and went, ‘But we're from Cowdenbeath, we don't win anything!’”
For their hard work, the pupils received certificates, a trophy, and £200 to put towards STEM items.
As part of their work, they also received the SSERC level 2 Young Stem Leaders (YSL) award, which is a recognised qualification they can later use.
Danni added: “I couldn’t be prouder of them!”
