THE sun shone on the Willie Duncan Memorial football tournament last week and Kinglassie Primary School were in top form to win it for a third successive year.
Named after a real community hero from Cardenden, the competition saw the team up against Denend, Cardenden and St Ninian's and together they produced some good performances at the John Thomson football facility at Wallsgreen Park.
There was a good crowd to watch the matches and a very close final between Kinglassie and Denend ended 1-0.
Organising committee chairman, Alex Burns, who is now in his 80s, is stepping down from many local committees due to health reasons and he commented: “It really was another very good performance from Kinglassie, but all the schools did themselves proud.
“I would also like to thank Ore Valley Housing Association for their excellent support, and also the staff of the Corrie and Bowhill centres in the village for their continued backing, the St Andrews Ambulance Association for their support, and everyone else who assisted on the day.
“Local police sergeant, Kevin McGuinness, refereed all the games and did a fantastic job and I must also thank Tom Allan for his continued help in making the presentations after the tournament.”
Alex was delighted to report that the committee will be continuing the tournament in his absence from next year onwards.
The Willie Duncan Trophy, named in memory of the man who spent decades serving on local groups such as Cardenden Community Council and the Bowhill Village Fair Committee, was lifted by the victorious Kinglassie team.
The large crowd gave Alex a huge round of applause for his 42 years of hard work organising local events.
He previously ran the annual John Thomson football competition, remembering the Cardenden man who played in goals for Celtic and Scotland and died aged 22 after an accident which occurred in an Old Firm game.
