NEXT Sunday will see a very special event take place in Cardenden.
The Bowhill Highland Games committee stages the 2026 Mini Highland Games, encouraging the children of the ABCD community to try their hand at several events, which will be part of the big Highland Games event at Wallsgreen Park in September.
The venue is in the grounds of the new Cardenden Scout Hall, behind St Ninian's Primary School, starting on Sunday May 24 at 1pm.
It's an opportunity for youngsters in the villages of Auchterderran, Bowhill, Cardenden and Dundonald to have a go at short races and several field events.
The Bowhill Highland Games committee's Don Campbell, the Lochgelly man who is the senior handicapper for the Scottish Highland Games set-up, said: “This will be our third mini games and we are hoping for a huge turn-out of very young competitors.
“There will be three hours of competition for the children and a lot of fun.
“We hope that plenty of people come along to watch what goes on and have a great day.”
For Don himself 2026 will be a big year. This is his 59th year of involvement in the Highland Games circuit, 30 years as a top sprinter, which also saw him featuring in the opening scenes of the film 'Chariots of Fire', about famous Scottish runner Eric Liddell.
He's also clocked up 29 years as a handicapper, setting key restrictions on starting places for runners to set up some exciting races throughout the summer.
Don, now in his seventies, said: “It has been a long involvement in the sport, but I must say I love running to this day and the involvement of the Games circuit.
“Sunday will be a great day, at the new venue for the Mini Games, and hopefully the weather will be kind to us.”
