People across Fife are being encouraged to get moving and take part in a daily mile challenge.

Active Fife’s May Walking Challenge invites residents to walk, wheel, or cycle a mile each day throughout May, with the option to track their progress across 31 Commonwealth countries using a downloadable world map.

The challenge has been launched in celebration of the return of the Commonwealth Mile at the Glasgow 2026 Games.

Councillor Linda Erskine, Fife Council’s spokesperson for communities and leisure, said: "The goal is simple: we want as many people in Fife as possible to walk or wheel throughout May.

"Regular physical activity has so many benefits, improving your physical, mental, and social wellbeing.

"And those who stay active tend to live longer, healthier, and happier lives.

"So whether you are looking to get fitter, enjoy the outdoors more, improve your mental health, have a good natter, make new friends, volunteer, or meet like-minded people, there’s something for everyone."

The challenge is fully inclusive and participants can complete their mile in any way that suits them, whether in their community, workplace, playground, or at home using mobility aids such as wheelchairs, buggies, or walking frames.

To kick off the month-long challenge, the Fife Walking Festival runs from May 1 to May 7 and features a range of free events and activities.

A community event will also be held at Lochore Meadows on Saturday, May 2 from 10am to 2pm, offering walks, led rides, stalls and activities.

Other activities include a walk up Benarty Hill, on Wednesday May 6 at 1:30pm, where participants will leave from Willie Clark Centre Lochore Meadows and head to Vane Farm via Benarty summit, to then return by mini bus.

Councillor Erskine encourages people to get involved as individuals or as part of a group, saying:  "You can take on the challenge individually, or join with friends, family, classmates, or colleagues and share the miles as a team.

"For those who already walk a lot, I would encourage you to double or triple your daily mile."
