Fife Council has apologised after attempted repairs to a busy Cowdenbeath road left it in an “even worse condition”.
The Bridge Street works took place just a fortnight ago, but large potholes have since been pictured in what should be an improved carriageway.
Councillor Darren Watt called the situation a “disgrace and an embarrassment”.
He said: “At this stage, I have not yet established why the road surface has been churned up so soon after repairs. It could be the materials used, weather conditions, workmanship, or a combination of all three, but regardless, this is completely unacceptable.
“Road users continue to bear the brunt with escalating running costs, and the very least they deserve are road surfaces that are safe and fit for purpose. We must keep our vehicles roadworthy with an annual MOT, so it's only right our roads are maintained to a standard that is vehicle-worthy.
“I will be following this up with Fife Council's head of roads and transportation, but no doubt, any remedial works will be another strain on already limited resources, and once again, the public will have to put up with further disruption and inconvenience.”
Last month’s repairs required three days’ worth of traffic delays, and there will be more when they’re repeated.
The authority’s service manager for roads design and build, Alistair Donald said: "We're aware that the work to resurface the road at Bridge Street, Cowdenbeath is not up to standard and we're looking into why this has happened.
"We'd like to reassure residents that we're working closely with our supplier to make sure these unusual failures are not repeated, and we'll monitor the affected area to make sure it's safe until we can arrange permanent repairs.
"We apologise to road users for any inconvenience in the meantime."
