A Dunfermline man’s careless motorway driving ended up in him crashing into a lorry.

Hassan Khan then collided with a van, knocking it on to its side and leaving his own car as a write-off.

Bank worker Khan, 24, of Woodpecker Crescent, appeared in the dock at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.

He admitted that on October 28, 2022, on the M90 between junctions 2 and 2a, he drove carelessly whereby he repeatedly weaved between lanes whilst overtaking and undertaking other vehicles. He then collided with a HGV whereby he lost control of his car and collided with a van, resulting in extensive damage to the van and his own car.

He had originally been charged with dangerous driving but the Crown accepted his guilty plea to the lesser charge of careless driving.

Depute fiscal Catherine Stevenson said that at 9.40pm Khan was travelling north on the M90 when the incident happened.

Khan, still classed as a new driver, was weaving about the road, overtaking and undertaking vehicles when a HGV pulled out.

Khan, driving a Vauxhall Astra, was trying to overtake the lorry and became “squeezed against the central reservation”.

Khan’s car hit the front of the lorry and then collided with a Mercedes Sprinter van, which was knocked over on to its side. Khan’s own car was a write-off as a result of the crash.

Khan already had three penalty points on his licence for speeding.

Sheriff Krista Johnston - who described Khan's actions as at “the high end of careless driving” - endorsed his licence with nine penalty points. This means he will be banned from driving for six months and will have pass another driving test before getting back on the road.

Khan was also fined £420.
