RESIDENTS in Dunfermline's Linen Quarter development have had enough after living with "unbearable" noise disturbance for more than four months.

One homeowner, who did not want to be named, told the Press that Pilmuir Fitness 10, the gym which opened at the property earlier this year, has made her life a "nightmare" because the building "is not made for it".

She said that the noise travels to her flat from as early as 6am.

She explained: "The gym within the Linen Quarter is causing noise disturbance to residents.

"It started operation in May but there was never planning permission for a gym.

"It is a bootcamp gym with classes with loud music that goes through the structure and makes life unbearable, classes start from 6am and then are on again from 6pm until 9pm.

"I contacted environmental health for four months, but they try to push it under the carpet.

"My life is a nightmare, I bought a flat and now this is impacting my mental health. I work shifts and I can't sleep in the day."

Pilmuir Fitness 10 opened on May 12 but Byzantian Developments Limited, the company behind the overhaul of the Grade A listed Pilmuir Works, has this month applied to Fife Council for retrospective planning permission to use the space for leisure use.

They had previously understood that use classifications were included as part of the original planning approval for the site but a visit from an enforcement officer revealed that a new application would have to be submitted.

The original plans had included Class 1, shops, Class 2, financial, professional and other services, and Class 10, non-residential institutions such as a crêche, library or religious space.

But a gym would come under Class 11, assembly and leisure use, which also allows for swimming baths and dance halls.

The Linen Quarter resident continued: "The value of my property goes down and they know they are running without permission, they say based on their phones that music is below the right level.

"It's because the building is not made for it, it carries the noise.

"The amount of contact I have made and now they are trying to sneak approval through.

"We have been dealing with the unbearable noise for four months, winter is coming and more people will be staying at home.

"My family can't stay, I can't invite friends."

Byzantian was contacted for comment however had not responded at the time of going to print.
