PLANS are on track for the creation of a new cycle path in Cowdenbeath.

Work on phase two of the initiative will see the route for bikes created along the entire length of the footway of Perth Road.

It is part of Fife Council's plans to make active travel routes between the Cowdenbeath area and Kelty which are a little over 2km apart.

Work on the latest stage of the plan is due to start today (Friday, September 1) and is set to continue for 81 days.

The full route will follow the A909 so it is easily accessed from many of Kelty’s residential roads. It also links to the Lochore Meadows access road.

In Cowdenbeath, the path joins the Cowdenbeath to Lochgelly active travel corridor (B981) which is less than half a mile from the town centre.

Once completed, it will comprise of a new off-carriageway shared pedestrian cycle track which will replace the existing on-road cycle lanes.

The new track will be approximately three metres wide with a buffer zone between the shared pedestrian/cycle track and the carriageway.

At some locations, the path may narrow slightly due to local constraints. For most of the rural section, the track is on the east side of the road, but will cross to the west side in Cowdenbeath, via a new toucan crossing.

Construction of the full route is expected to continue until early 2024.
