A SEWAGE problem affecting a street in Cowdenbeath for "at least six months" has finally been resolved.

The problem on Thistle Street was caused by a blockage and resulted in wastewater spilling onto the road, at the junction with Bridge Street.

Local councillor Darren Watt had kicked up a stink about the problem and told the Times: "It seems to be raw sewage that's flowing from the drain which is disgusting and that's causing a lot of unpleasantness for local residents.

"Fife Council have been pro-active in clearing where possible and Scottish Water have been involved too bit for whatever reason they've not been able to solve it.

"I raised it at least six months ago and it's not been dealt with despite numerous complaints.

"It tends to flow 10 to 15 metres from one drain to the other and luckily we've had drier weather so it's not been overflowing as much.

"It's also at the junction, so thankfully it's not that close to the houses, but it's still an unpleasant site."

The Times got in contact with Scottish Water who said they have taken action to address the problem.

A spokesperson said: "Scottish Water are aware of the issues at Thistle Street, Cowdenbeath.

"There were initially challenges in opening the manhole which had seized and required traffic management to open and repair.

"This work was completed and our sewer response team attended over the weekend to try and clear a suspected blockage.

"Our engineers attended again on Monday and the sewer was running freely.

"A clean up has been scheduled for this week to wash down the road surface.

"We will continue to monitor this issue and would like to thank local residents for their patience.”

Cllr Watt said: "I am pleased that issue has finally been resolved, but especially pleased for the residents of Thistle Street who had to endure this for far too long."
