The Proclaimers sang about it but two Cardenden women went out and walked 500 miles for Macmillan - with a little help from their friends.

Fiona Bradford and Georgina McConville, who both work at Boots on Station Road, teamed up with colleagues from the company’s stores in Tayside to walk from Invergowrie to Broughty Castle on Sunday.

Store manager, Fiona, spoke to the Times before the challenge.

She said: “It’s in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support and we’re combining with other stores in the area which are in Fife and Tayside.

“We’re going to be walking from Invergowrie to Broughty Ferry Castle which I think is about an eight-mile walk.

“So what we’re hoping for, is between the number of colleagues that are doing it, we’re trying to walk 500 miles for Macmillan.

“It’s really to just help raise awareness for the charity.

“We’ll all be wearing Macmillan t-shirts or something green whilst walking so hopefully it will make an impact as we walk along.”

While just Fiona and Georgina took part from the Cardenden store, they were joined by 24 colleagues from the remaining Tayside and Fife stores.

And speaking to the Times on Monday they were both on cloud nine after finishing the challenge, although the pair admitted they’re feeling a bit achy after all the walking!

Georgina said: “It was rainy to start with but we only needed to put our coat on once, the rest of the time there was a slight drizzle but we were glad of that because it was such a warm day.

“Then the sun came out so it was just glorious.

“It just feels really rewarding honestly, and the total we raised is fantastic because we’re such a small branch but our customers are always so generous.”

Thanks to the generosity of their customers, who were handing over £20, £10 and £5 notes, the store raised a whopping £460, which Boots will now match.

This means that their total donations for the charity will be an impressive £920.

Another walk for Boots staff at the Fife and Tayside stores has also been organised with around the same number of people for this coming weekend.
