HOUSEHOLDERS in Fife are being urged to "be on their guard" after reports of bogus callers approaching residents about checking their boiler.
Fife Council has issued the warning after false traders turned up on the doorsteps of tenants' homes.
The local authority confirmed that its officers will never ask for money and will always make an appointment prior to arrival.
A statement read: "Fife Council are urging householders to be on their guard when an unexpected trader calls at the door.
"We have had reports of bogus callers approaching tenants about checking their boiler.
"Fife Council will never ask for money and will always make an appointment prior to arrival."
It continued: "If you are thinking about getting some work done in and around your property, do not respond to the leaflets dropped through your door and do not engage on your doorstep.
"Householders often give away information that can be exploited, meaning one way or another, the householder is out of pocket.
"If you have been the victim of a crime having received a leaflet through your door or spoken with a bogus caller please report it to Police Scotland on 101."
