EUROPEAN boxing champion Niamh Mitchell is set to make more history this weekend when she headlines an all-female show.

The talented 16-year-old, who is a member of Bowhill Miners Boxing Club, will top the bill for the first-ever event containing a card solely of female competitors on Saturday.

Her club is hosting the event, which is set to bring boxers from as far afield as Canada,as well as England and Scotland, and will consist of 15-16 bouts.

James White, one of Niamh’s coaches at Bowhill Miners, said: “It’ll be a good event.

“It’s the first one ever in Scotland, all-female. It’s just showing you that they’re breaking down boundaries. It’s came a long way.”

It is set to provide Niamh, a pupil at Dunfermline High School, with another opportunity to make history after her success last year.

In October, she became the first female boxer to win gold for Scotland at a major international competition, at the EUBC (European Boxing Confederation) European Junior Championship.

Niamh, who only took up boxing over three years ago having previously competed in kickboxing, won the 52kg light bantamweight title, becoming only the second Scot to win gold at the European Junior Championships, and only the seventh Scottish boxer, male or female, to become a European champion at any level.

Her achievements saw her named Young Athlete of the Year at the Scottish Sports Awards 2022, and as the Press sponsored Sports Personality of the Year at the Dunfermline and West Fife Sports Council Sports Awards, which were held in February for 2022.

At that event, she said of the upcoming show: “It’s the first all-girls show in Scotland. It’s my first ever home show that I’ll be boxing on and, the fact it’s history as well, is another good thing.”

Niamh prepared for the event by travelling to France earlier this month for a Scotland versus France ‘Dual International’, which concluded a 10-day training camp for Boxing Scotland junior and youth boxers with members of the French national squad.

In a 52kg youth bout, the West Fifer defeated Maireen Clodomir on a split decision, with James commenting: “They flew her in for the fight at the end, for three or four days.

“She won quite comfortably; it was a split, but it was never a split.

She wasn’t too happy with her performance, but if you’re winning comfortably at international level, and you’re still trying to pick the bones out of it, I suppose it shows you where you are.”

Tickets for the show, which begins at 7.30pm, with doors opening an hour earlier, at Bowhill Community Centre, Cardenden, cost £25 and, for more information and to purchase, visit Bowhill Miners Boxing Club’s Facebook page.
