A 26-YEAR-OLD man, taken to the Queen Margaret Hospital for treatment, went on a wrecking spree smashing a number of windows.

Aaron Murphy, of Barclay Street, Cowdenbeath, appeared at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.

He had been late in going for his depot medication injection for mental health issues.

Murphy admitted that on January 12, 2021, at the Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline, he struck a chair against a wall, repeatedly pulled drawers from a unit and threw them against windows, struck a window with a beverage trolley, damaging the chair, drawers, trolley, walls and windows.

Depute fiscal Amy Sneddon said that around 10pm Murphy was escorted to the hospital.

She went on: “He was somewhat agitated.”

A male charge nurse tried to speak to Murphy, who walked away from him, picked up a chair and struck a wall with it, causing a large hole.

He then entered a room, pulled out a drawer from a unit and hit it against a window, smashing it.

A health care supervisor tried to calm Murphy down but he took a trolley and hit it against a window in the day room, cracking it.

He ran out of the hospital via a fire exit but returned shortly afterwards, appeared to be irate and took another drawer which he used to break another window.

He then picked up a broken chair and used it to smash a fourth window. In doing so he caused a significant injury to his finger and required hospital treatment for it.

Defence solicitor Elaine Buist said her client had been taken to hospital because he required his depot injection.

Sheriff Charles Macnair told Murphy: “You were required to attend the hospital for treatment. That was for your benefit and the benefit of the public.

“Instead of taking this treatment you caused significant damage to the hospital.”

Murphy was put on a restriction of liberty order for 135 days.
