A COWDENBEATH man has been sentenced for an assault on his partner.

Matthew Johnstone, 25, of Union Street, appeared at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.

He admitted that on July 8 last year at Factory Road, Cowdenbeath, he assaulted a female by striking a phone out of her hand.

Depute fiscal Azrah Yousaf said the couple had been in two-year on and off relationship.

At the time of the offence, the relationship had ended and she asked him to move out.

She was woken up by Johnstone shouting as he was returning to the house with a friend at 12.20am.

She was trying to sleep and decided to phone the police but he grabbed the phone from her.

Defence solicitor Peter Robertson said: “He accepts full responsibility and is embarrassed by his behaviour.

“He has issues with alcohol and drugs. He was drinking two bottles of Buckfast a day and taking cannabis at the time.”

He added the couple are still together.

Sheriff Edward Gilroy imposed a community payback order with 12 months of supervision with drugs and alcohol counselling.
