NEW STREET names in Lumphinnans will honour the two doctors who tried to revive local children who drowned in a tragic accident in the village.

Three youngsters fell through ice on Swans Pond in February 1953 and despite desperate attempts to save them, they sadly passed away.

Asked to come up with names for the new development south of Lochgelly Road, Lumphinnans Community Council felt their efforts should be remembered.

They suggested Meldrum View, McLeod Way and Zetland Crescent.

A report to Cowdenbeath area committee explained: "The proposed street names ‘Meldrum View’ and ‘McLeod Way’ honour doctors who tried to revive local children who were drowned at Swans Pond in Lumphinnans.

"The proposed street name ‘Zetland Crescent’ honours The Marquess of Zetland who donated the war memorial to the village."

The new development, on what was previously open land, will consist of 97 new council houses, ranging in size from one-to six-bedroom homes.

Work began last August.

The names of the new streets already exist elsewhere in Fife, property officer Ryan McQuade said there's already a Zetland Place in Lochgelly, Meldrum Court and McLeod Drive in Cowdenbeath, but councillors were content to go ahead.

The committee report added: "The streets in this development will include the locality name of Lumphinnans in the address.

"Royal Mail will assign unique postcodes for each street, which together with the different street suffixes will further differentiate these streets from those in Cowdenbeath and Lochgelly."
