FIREWORKS night went with a bang in Cardenden with thousands of villagers turning out for the bonfire and pyrotechnics display.

It was held in Wallsgreen Park and the weather conditions were perfect as the flames climbed higher and rockets streaked into the sky.

The bonfire was lit on Friday at 7pm by local councillor Linda Erskine and Margaret King, of Bowhill Centre, assisted by new members of the organising committee, 19 year-olds Cameron Thomson and Dana Paterson.

By that time around 4,000 people had gathered for the display and were treated to a fantastic evening of fireworks, with music provided by popular local DJ, Kenny McGurk.

Chairman of the Cardenden Community Bonfire and Fireworks Committee, Alex Burns, said: “I would like to thank everyone who has helped us make this display happen.

"The weather conditions were perfect and it was excellent to see a fantastic crowd turn out for the evening.

“The organising committee is very grateful for the financial support received from various sources and everyone who assisted on the day, including members of staff from the Bowhill and Corrie centres.

“Also a massive thanks goes to community minded local farmer, Brodie Wallace, for all his assistance on the day, which was greatly appreciated.”

The fireworks ended up costing more than £5,000 – about £2,000 more than the last display – and Alex said the support of the community will be needed to make sure the event continues in Cardenden.
