SHE may have left school at the age of 16 with no qualifications but a personal trainer from Kelty has now been crowned Young Businesswoman of the Year.
Robyn Drummond has thrived since creating an award-winning fitness company “by accident” just two and a half years ago, and the latest success is one to add to her collection.
Fresh from celebrating being crowned Fife’s Best Fitness Business last year, the 27-year-old attended the Women’s Business Club conference in Edinburgh last Monday and, to her disbelief, her name was called out on stage.
“My family and friends have been winding me up about me being called Young Businesswoman of the Year!,” she told the Times.
“I am super excited about it.
“I wasn’t expecting it at all, though. The event was a conference and an awards presentation during the afternoon, so I went in my work uniform - which is my own branded clothing - and I would not have went like that had I thought I would have any chance of winning!
“So, there’s me sitting there and chatting with all these amazing women and doing some networking - but the first category announced was the one I was in. Let me tell you that my heart was pounding. I was then totally shocked to win. It was just this amazing feeling.”
She feels that the award win will act as motivation to continue her work, as well as pushing Robyn Drummond Fitness (RDF) to new levels.
“This really means more to me than I can put into words”, she reflected.
“I feel so lucky to win, but I feel that it has solidified what I want to be and do, I think.
“I was like, ‘Yeah, I am a businesswoman! I’ve built my own business!’. It was that sense of recognition, I guess.
“I started this at 24 and here I am now; that’s crazy to me. If you had told me a few years ago that all this would have happened to me, I would have laughed in your face.
“I didn’t know how to run my own business. I didn’t even mean this to be a business. It was just an accident, really.”
Robyn - who moved from Glasgow to Kelty ten years ago - started RDF at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, and her membership grew rapidly as the year progressed.
She has now helped thousands of women across Fife with their health and fitness goals.
“There was a lightbulb moment for me along the way when I realised that there was something good here,” she said.
“I left school at the age of 16 with no qualifications at all, really; I think one or two standard grades, but that was it. I didn’t really have any sense of direction.
“With not much of a formal education behind me, I then went to Fife College and I really should have paid more attention as I was doing a business course.
“I’ve been able to do a course through the Open University, so I now have my Bachelor’s Degree (BSc (Hons) Sport, Fitness and Coaching) and all my personal trainer qualifications as well.”
Robyn is in the process of redeveloping her website - which is supported by her best friend, and admin assistant, Lindsay - and she will soon be meeting clients in the local area at fayres over Christmas: Cowdenbeath Primary School on December 3, and Lochore Miners Institute in Ballingry on December 17.
