FIFE recorded the joint second highest number of coronavirus-related deaths in Scotland last week.

A total of five people passed away in the Kingdom with Covid-19 mentioned on their death certificate between August 8 and 14. According to the National Records of Scotland (NRS), there were 66 coronavirus-related deaths across Scotland last week, up six from the previous week.

Of the 27 women and 39 men who lost their lives, 49 were aged 75 or older, 12 were 65 to 74 and five were under 65.

There were 50 deaths in hospitals, 10 in care homes and six at home or in a non-institutional setting.

There were six deaths in Aberdeen and five in both Fife and South Lanarkshire. In total, 25 council areas had at least one death involving Covid-19 last week.

Pete Whitehouse, director of statistical services, said: “People living in the most deprived areas were 2.3 times as likely to die with Covid-19 as those in the least deprived areas.

"The gap slowly widened over the period of the pandemic but has narrowed since January, when the gap was 2.5.

"Deaths from all causes registered in Scotland in this week was 1,126, which is 112 or 11 per cent more than the five year average.”
