THE waiting is over as Cowdenbeath look to start their Lowland League campaign with a win this weekend.

They will travel to face Celtic B at Airdrie's Excelsior Stadium on Saturday in their league opener.

However, they will have to do it without two key players.

Striker Scott Sinclair, who posed Premiership side St Mirren problems at the weekend, broke a toe just after half-time.

Towering centre-back, Daniel Martins, also injured a hamstring against Saints just seconds before the interval.

And of course Cowden close their Premier Sports Cup sectional games tonight (Wednesday) against FC Edinburgh, at Meadowbank Stadium, and hopefully there will be no more injury problems for the Blue Brazil.

Cowden boss Maurice Ross, while disappointed to lose these two promising players, feels his side can go into the match with Celtic B with confidence.

“Considering we were playing against a Premiership side on Saturday, I felt we asked them a lot of questions,” he said.

“Their ‘keeper had to make two particularly good saves, from Scott Sinclair and David Struthers, and we put together some good moves.

“We have had three tough Premier Sports Cup games, but I have felt in each game the team has got better and better as they knit together into a unit which is starting to fully understand each other.”

Looking ahead he added: “We could have done without the injuries to Scott and Daniel but the performances of the players who subbed on for them in the second-half, Alfie Robinson and Chris Aikamhenze, shows that we have players who can take the game to Celtic B in our league opener.

“Collecting league points starts on Saturday and our target is to open our tally in this match at Airdrie.”

Ross said he is aiming to add one more player to his squad before the Celtic B fixture.

Following the Celtic B clash, Open Goal Broomhill will be at Central Park for a 7.45pm start and then, on Saturday, July 30, Gala Fairydean Rovers are visitors to Cowdenbeath.
