AN ADORABLE new staff member at Bellyeoman Primary will be lending a helping paw to pupils.

Lola, the school's new therapy dog, will be visiting students each Thursday, starting this week, alongside her owner, Emma Ritchie.

As well as making an appearance in classrooms, Lola will be providing support for students with additional needs, and giving youngsters a sense of responsibility as they learn how to care for her.

Ashley Brown, headteacher, said: "Children can read stories to her and walk her, she will be a huge benefit for them.

"Some have met her already on an individual basis and are really excited – it has been lovely to see the reaction.

"The children are thrilled – there is an element of nature and support.

"She is lovely – very cute!"

The school arranged for Lola to take on the position through Oliver's Army, a charity who provide training for assistance dogs across the country.

The 15-month-old pup will take on the role in her first ever job as a qualified therapy dog after starting her training at just 14-weeks-old.

Emma added: "She lives at home with five other dogs and has passed her bronze, silver and gold Kennel Club awards.

"She loves walks and likes to zoom around in big, open fields.

"Her favourite place to sleep is on the couch or in my bed. She likes to be comfortable and warm, her favourite thing is food and she loves to be given treats.

"We are looking forward to meeting all the children and staff and are excited for our future working here!"
