THE firm that handles waste on behalf of Fife Council has apologised after recycling centres in Cowdenbeath and Lochgelly had to close over the weekend.

It follows on from last week's disruption when thousands of bins were not collected due to staff shortages.

Those same workforce issues prompted Fife Resource Solutions, which also operates the council's 11 recycling centres, to take the "difficult decision" to close the doors at Cowdenbeath on Saturday and Lochgelly on Sunday.

Both are now open as normal.

FRS chief executive Robin Baird said: "We took the difficult decision to close Lochgelly and Cowdenbeath recycling centres at the weekend due to staff shortages.

"Residents were directed to alternative nearby sites at Dunfermline or Dalgety Bay.

"We're really sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. The centres are open as normal this week."
