A MASSIVE £4,000 has been raised in memory of a much-loved Lochgelly man.

The cash, for the Palliative Care Outreach nurses at NHS Fife, was collected at a charity night for Charles (Chuck) Buchanan who died last year at the age of 63.

Chuck, who had two children Barry and Lorraine, as well as five grandchildren, had been diagnosed with oesophagus cancer last February and passed away at the family home in September.

Wife Grace said the contribution from the palliative nurses meant that her husband was able to spend his final days at home surrounded by family.

"I am just grateful for the support and for what they did for Chuck as well as the support they gave to us too," she told the Times.

"After had had the treatments, in the end he was at home. These palliative outreach nurses came in every morning, every afternoon and even at night sometimes we had people come in.

"The nurses were absolutely brilliant. He was pleased he was at home."

In an effort to pay the service back for their efforts, the Buchanan family – along with friends – organised a charity night in the Old Ship Inn, Chuck's old local, which included entertainment, food, raffles and games.

Members of the local community chipped in to help including members of the pub's Welsh Club with whom Chuck enjoyed trips to Wales in previous years with fellow pub locals.

Chuck's brother Peter and nephew Lee also had took part in a sponsored headshave in front of guests to help boost the final total.

"We sold tickets for it – we could have sold it three times over but that was his pub so it had to be there," she added. "He used to be a regular but not in the last few years.

"We have so many people to thank for their help in organising a brilliant night. Chuck would have been so pleased to see us repay all the kindness and care shown to him."
