Edinburgh City 1 Cowdenbeath 0

cinch League Two
Attendance - 424

FOR the second successive game Cowdenbeath found themselves unluckily being squeezed out of a point.

Only three days after being denied a point by a questionable penalty decision against league leaders Kelty Hearts; at Ainslie Park, on Friday night, Cowden dominated the second-half after going in at the break a goal down, and this time some inspired goalkeeping and the woodwork denied the Blues.

It now leaves Cowden seven points adrift of second bottom spot with games starting to run out.

The Cowdenbeath line-up showed a couple of changes from the match at Kelty, with Kyle Miller back in the centre of midfield after the completion of his suspension, and Craig Thomson moving to right wing back, with Harvey Swann dropping out.

Defensively, again Cowden did well with City only having six shots at goal all night, and only one on target, and in the second period the home side completely played second fiddle to the Blues.

Cowden had 10 shots at the Edinburgh net, with half of them on target, but they just could not get a goal.

It was very frustrating for the good travelling support, and the Blue Brazil really need to start converting chances.

Cowdenbeath started the game positively and Thomson’s fierce right foot shot was well saved by City ‘keeper Brian Schwake.

City were struggling to pose Cammy Gill many problems and it took them to the 32nd minute to get a decent shot in when Danny Handling’s 20 yarder went over.

Six minutes later a Craig Barr header from close in was blocked in front of Schwake but in the run-up to the break Edinburgh had a good spell and Anthony McDonald saw his low right foot shot from 12 yards blocked by Sam Denham, then in the 42nd minute The Citizens took the lead.

A corner for the home side posed issues for the Blues and when the ball was not cleared Michael Travis fed Ryan SHANLEY whose shot flew high past Gill.

Cowdenbeath started the second-half brightly, with Quinn Coulson on for Andrew Barrowman, and Alex Ferguson saw his right foot shot blocked, then Dave Carty saw his 19 yarder held by Schwake.

Just before the hour Thomson saw Schwake defy him, then in 66 minutes Craig Barr got his head to a Mullen free-kick and the ball cannoned to safety off the City bar.

With 22 minutes to go City’s Ben Stirling got in a shot for the home side but the ball went well wide.

As the game went into the last 20 minutes Cowden introduced Swann and Joe Moore, and in 79 minutes Thomson got space on the edge of the City box and his shot flew inches wide, then four minutes later another visiting sub, Liam Buchanan, saw his 20 yarder brilliantly saved by Schwake.

Cowden were now encamped in the City half and in time added on a Craig Barr header from a free-kick was grabbed by Schwake to ensure the win for the home side.
