YOUNGSTERS are making a splash at Lochore Meadows as they enjoy family water activities as part of a national Get Into Summer campaign.

Donning wetsuits and grabbing paddles, children and teens have been having a go at paddleboarding, kayaking and canoeing – just some of what's on offer during the holidays.

It's part of Fife Council’s summer programme, which supports the Scottish Government and Parent Club’s ‘Get Into Summer’ campaign.

Megan Buchanan, sports development officer at the council, said: "We always have a full programme of summer activities for children and their families, either free or at a reduced cost.

"This year, with the additional funding from the Scottish Government, we have been able to really extend this to include even more families who may otherwise have missed out.

"Given the last year and more, it's so important that our children and young people get the chance to get out and get active and can reconnect with their peers in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.

"We can't underestimate the impact the pandemic has had on our young people and it's great to see so many of them just having fun again."

The campaign offers free and discounted activities and tips for children, teens, parents and carers to boost their health and mental wellbeing.

Other activities taking place throughout Fife include a wide range of sports sessions, family orienteering, outdoor drawing classes and cycling sessions for children and families.

Councillor Judy Hamilton said: "Lockdowns, home-learning and restrictions have been difficult for many of our families – emotionally, physically and financially.

"It's important that we support their health and wellbeing and provide opportunities for participation.

“Fife Council is supporting families and communities, by continuing with Cafe Inc – our school dinner service free for all children, young people and their families, allowing families to share a meal and participate with others every day.

"Along with this Scottish Government funding, we have been able to enhance our summer activities; we are encouraging families to participate and enjoy a free range of activities in communities. "These activities will give people the opportunity to get out, get active and get involved this summer."
